The Myrniong Hall

Having no place of entertainment other than barns for dances and concerts, the local residents built the Myrniong Hall in about 1880. This blue stone building was added to in 1922, but on December 5th, 1930 was destroyed by fire. With liberal local and outside subscriptions, together with the insurance money, the present hall, much larger than the original was built and officially opened on August 4th 1931, completely free of debt. Attendance at functions held in the hall increased and to cater for the increase in numbers an annexe, card room and an enlarged supper room, built by local contractor, D. Myers, were opened in April, 1938. Myrniong still retains its popularity as a dance Hall, as at a recent ball well over 400 patrons enjoyed the excellent dance floor.

Myrniong Hall

Over the years, practically every family living in the district has given wonderful service to the welfare of the hall. Unfortunately, as is often the case, names of office-bearers of the original committee have become lost, but of later years such names as Cowan, Shanahan, Myers, Cresswell, Muir, Dugdale, Lidgett, Linsdell, Lawrence, Anderson, Allen, Smith, Fowler, White, Hornebuckle, Phenix, Purcell, O’Connor, Manly, Thompson, Sanders and Fraser appear in the minute book. Mr. W. Lidgett who has held the position of President for the last 10 years (acting as Hon. Secretary from I929 to 1937) succeeded his uncle. Cr. R. Lidgett who was President from early 1931 to 1949. Both gave an enormous amount of time and work to the erection of the hall and it is largely through their efforts that the building is in its present fine state of upkeep.
