About Myrniong
Myrniong is situated approximately 80 km from Melbourne. With its close proximity to the Western Freeway it is only a short 45 minute drive to Melbourne, 30 minutes to Ballarat and 40 minutes to Geelong. The community is scattered throughout the Pentland Hills below Mt. Blackwood and still retains its country character. Beef cattle, sheep, pigs and chooks all graze at Myrniong, and the cropping of wheat , barley, oats and canola play a large part in this small rural community.
The Plough Hotel is the only remaining hotel still in use to this day and is a favourite haunt for many locals and day trippers. The Myrniong Primary school has 180 pupils from surrounding areas. Established in 1859, it will soon celebrate its 150 birthday. There are also three beautiful churches in Myrniong along with many attractive blue and sandstone buildings built over 100 years ago which are private residences. The historic Myrniong Hall is for hire and there is a reserve and public toilet facilities.
Of the many attractions to the area St. Anne’s winery is open 7 days a week with a working cooper there three days a week. Myrniong is in close proximity to the Werribee Gorge, Wombat State Forest and the Lerdederg River for bushwalking. Pyke’s Creek was built in 1911 to supply irrigation to the market gardens in Werribbee and Bacchus Marsh. Today Pyke’s is a popular spot for fishing and recreation.
